If you do it this way, I bet you could be playing this before too long. You might find you have a knack for playing by ear. Or you can have the music there in front of you (is it available?) but the strategy is that you try to rely more heavily on playing by ear to help you read the music - as opposed to visa versa. You can memorize the notes or try some simple method to write it down, not necessarily the usual musical note method. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, keep going till you get it right. If you have an "ear", you'll be able to figure it all out, melody and harmony. Then by trial and error, pick the notes out on the piano. If you are back to ground zero, that is, you basically have to learn how to read music over again, I think you may be able to achieve your goal more quickly by learning to play this piece of music by ear.įirst, record the music. I consider this an easy to play piece of music. The lgth of time it will take you to learn how to play this will depend on how devoted you are to achieving your goal. Very moody, or as Nikolas says, "melancholic." I love that song, too, both versions, but I like Gary Jules odd sounding out-of-tune-ish piano version of this best.
